    The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Mission

    The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

    Standards vs. Curriculum – Explaining the Difference

    1. What a child needs to know and do at each grade
    2. *Adopted by the Illinois State Board of Education in a public meeting

     
    1. How the child is taught, including the materials used to teach.
    2. *Adopted by the local RCS School Board in an open meeting

     

     

     

    Example of a Standard: 3rd-grade math:

    Geometric measurement: understand concepts of area and relate area to multiplication and to addition.

     

    CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.C.5
    Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.

    CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.C.5.A
    A square with side length 1 unit, called "a unit square," is said to have "one square unit" of area, and can be used to measure area.

    CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.C.5.B
    A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by n unit squares is said to have an area of n square units.
